John Carmack awarded lifetime achievement award at GDC

Carmack's minions congratulate him over the GDC win.

Yesterday it was announced that id Software Chief Technical Officer (CTO) John Carmack will be awarded with the GDC Lifetime achievement award.

Carmack is the mastermind behind the Doom series and as well as Quake and Wolfenstein. Single handedly id Software created and revolutionized 3D games and are seriously to thank for the First-Person-Shooter genre. The 2010 Game Developers Choice Awards will take place on March 11th as part of GDC 2010 in San Francisco.

“It’s no exaggeration to say that John Carmack and id Software have had a monumental influence on all modern 3D  games, but especially the first-person shooter genre,” said GDC event director Meggan Scavio of Carmack’s selection. “John is one of the key figures in the history of video games, and we’re delighted to be giving him the Lifetime Achievement award this year.”

I personally grew up playing id games and Carmack has always been a god to me, and I still to this day play Doom to remind me of how things used to be. You’re welcome Infinity Ward/Bungie for practically inventing your industry!

Hosting the even will be Warren Spector who is the founder of Junction Point Studios (of Dues Ex, System Shock and Thief fame).
